Understanding the importance of leadership and teamwork is a very important lesson in life, that I have been able to exercise in the past month or so. I have been challenged to think critically about a topic I did not know much about. However developed comprehensive knowledge on the effects that social media and technology have on a developing mind. Throughout the semester working in a group, has opened my eyes to areas of the course that I enjoy and found things that I am good at. As well as, gaining a greater insight into things that I need to tinker with in my own life to be able to give more to my group.
For assessments 2 and 3 I found myself in a group with a bunch of girls, that are intelligent, funny, hard workers and dedicated. Our group was made up of varying personalities, some quiet, some loud (me), some creative and some with strong direction for the assignment. We seemed to gel quite nicely and bounce ideas off each other, provided each other with support, especially when it came to presenting in front of the class. I found that at times we could have used peoples strengths a little more to our advantage. However we easily adapted to peoples desires and operated quite smoothly with each other.
An important lesson that I learnt throughout this process, was the importance of researching before making assumptions and/or thinking about possible final outcomes. I remember trying to figure out the key message of the campaign before researching, I thought I would find a lot more on certain aspects about developmental social media than I did. But it wasn’t til I researched properly I was able to form comprehensive insights about the effects that social media has on the mind. The concept of JOMO was definitely not at the for front of my mind at the beginning of this task.
I found that I definitely thrived when it came to creating the podcast script, and wish we recorded a 5 minute prototype. The conversationalist approach to exploring a topic is something that I think I am suited too. Word from the group was that I made it so it was not cliche or cringe, but relatable and it would create connection with a potential listener. Which was nice to hear, because radio and podcasts is something that I want to strive for, this assessment had definitely opened my eyes to that.
Throughout this semester I definitely realised that time management is very important. With my busy and unpredictable schedule it was hard to make it to particular tutorials/ workshops and found it hard to keep up to date with what ideas the group had developed and what direction we want to take the campaign. I could imagine it was hard and frustrating for the team as well, however they were all very understanding that my life is busy and were very considerate and respected the circumstances. Which is a fundamental building block for team work. Respect and valuing everyones opinions is definitely an area we were strong in. We were all so different, and at first we were tentative with voicing opinions we started to build respect and trust.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed working with this group and at times very challenging. I feel that my researching skills have improved, my ability to work in a team (in an academic sense) has definitely developed and understand the importance of working cohesively with others.
